The Federal Center

                                               The Federal Center
If you walk down Deaborn in between Jackson Boulevard and Adams in Chicago you will notice three black international style buildings. These three buildings are known as The Federal Center. The first building is the Federal Building.Next is The Dirksen Courthouse. The Federal Center is located downtown Chicago Loop at 230 South Dearborn Street. It is 562 sqaure feet (171m) tall. The Center was made in 1974.Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created this 45 story building. This building is a good representation of its time period because back in that time most of the buildngs where black, tall, and geometric shapes.
The government basically controls everything around the building and people who take care of big business. The street where there Federal Center is located is a very busy block.People are going in and out of this building to go from court or from court.
As you walk to the near the building you will notice a big courtyard leading to the Alexander Calder sculpture.Another thing we found interesting was how the concrete is in a box shaped basically a straight line that leads to the different buildings. The building is not close to the street and it is not push back it is in the middle. On the side of the building are other building  that are owned by the government for their  use. All the buildings stand alone. There are some plants and concrete posts outside the buildings. Both protect and beautify the buildings. These three buildings are  similar to each other. One building is tall, one is short and one is fat also has a sculpture by Alexander Calder called the  Flamingo in the middle of the three buildings.Other buildings around it are also black and shaped sort of like it.The Federal Center resembles Mies  van der Rohe’s earlier Toronto-Dominion Centre.  It was expanded in 1991 with the addition of the 28-story Metcalfe Federal Building to the south across Jackson Boulevard.

To see The Federal Building you have to look up at the 45-story structure .I-beams are also painted black. The colors of the buildings are black .  Having those colors make it different than other buildings in the city. Alexander Calder’s  sculpture called the ‘’Flamingo’’ a 53-foot (16m) red steel project that was created on  October 24,1974.The Flamingo has very distinct shape different than any other sculpture in Chicago. The sculpture was conserved and also restored in 1998 to make the building more eligent. In the spring famers make the Federal center a famer’s market.  In the summer it is a local hang out spot to citizens. The roof is 562 ft tall and it gives the building there nice shape or style.
The purpose of this building is  government usage building, It is a traditional symbol of the state government. It also keeps the citizens, people, workers and more informed about the  changes in the federal areas. There are plant pots throughout the year, But it doesn't demonstrate the function. The inside if the building had marble floors. The big building lets in a lot of light. There are elevators on every floor to let people have access to other parts of the building. Its a symbol of royalty and the form of the government. The designs that these three buildings has makes it easy to use and work with. For the people who do work in building they also have the post office an another work area close by so its easy to move around. One building entrance has the glass door gives you access to see inside the building. When this building was under construction the economy was doing good.
To conclude, the building we chose was the federal center. I had identified the location of the federal center. Also, the styles and the functions of the building. This building have many different purposes and functions.
